Tips for gathering evidence to demonstrate your skills

The important thing to remember when gathering evidence is that the more evidence the better - that is, the more evidence you gather to demonstrate your skills, the more confident an assessor can be that you have learned the skills not just at one point in time, but are continuing to apply and develop those skills (as opposed to just learning for the test!). Furthermore, one piece of evidence that you collect will not usualy demonstrate all the required criteria for a unit of competency, whereas multiple overlapping pieces of evidence will usually do the trick!

What evidence can you provide to prove your understanding of each of the following citeria?

Undertake simple soil assessment tests

  1. Collect and prepare soil samples for testing according to instructions
  2. Determine basic soil characteristics and health using field test techniques

Apply approved organic soil supplements to improve soil

  1. Identify probable soil improvement needs from tests, and confirm with supervisor
  2. Apply soil supplements to improve soil condition according to supervisor instructions and permaculture principles
  3. Use permaculture planting techniques to improve soils and plant nutrition
  4. Apply mulch to maintain moisture and discourage unwanted growth according to workplace procedures
  5. Monitor soil health and moisture according to workplace procedures
  6. Monitor use of reclaimed water for signs of toxicity according to supervisor instructions
  7. Conduct observations for signs of problems in plant health
  8. Conduct basic tests for soil health where signs are found
  9. Report observations and basic test results to supervisor
  10. Record soil improvement activity according to workplace procedures
